DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 00596-21 is a shock absorber spring rated at 75 N/mm, 270 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.
Key Features
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- 119 mm of usable stroke
- Free length 270 mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Öhlins part number 00596-21
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Measured spring rate 75 N/mm
How Öhlins Makes Them
Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.
Dimensions
Free length 270 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 75 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.
What This Rate Does
If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
What the Rear Spring Decides
On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.
Applications
Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.
Fitting
If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
