Manufacture and Tolerance
Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.
Size and Rate
The 61 mm bore and 220 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 75 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Choosing 75 N/mm
This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
Rate and the Linkage
Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel.
Applications
Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers.
What Fitting Involves
Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload.
Road Approval
