How Öhlins Makes Them
Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.

Öhlins holds the free length at 230 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.
Choosing 40 N/mm
Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
What the Rear Spring Decides
A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.
Applications
If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork.
Installation
The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
