How It Works
It does not prevent a headshake from starting; it takes the energy out before it builds. A damper that is mounted at an angle loses some of its effective stroke. A damper that suddenly feels different is a sign that a service is due. Öhlins documents the service procedure, so any authorised workshop can do the work. The damping force comes from oil being pushed through a controlled restriction.
Choosing the Right Size
Where Öhlins offers a dedicated kit for your motorcycle, that kit is usually the simpler route. Measure with the steering straight and at both locks to confirm the stroke is sufficient. Universal parts are the right choice when no model-specific Öhlins unit exists. A builder who knows the geometry of the bike will get the most out of a universal unit. A damper with 90 mm of stroke that runs out of travel will limit steering lock — measure first.
Maintenance
Damping is set with a click adjuster, and each position is a defined step. The adjuster range is wide enough to cover a light naked bike and a heavy sports tourer.
Road Approval
Road approval: there is no approval tied to a particular motorcycle, because the damper is universal. On a road-registered bike the mounting may need an inspection — check with us first.
