Function
This position is identified by its number rather than by a dimension. A scored piston face means oil bypasses the shims entirely. A check valve holds pressure in one direction and opens in the other; a worn one lets damping bleed away. Piston bands are consumables — they wear against the bore and lose their seal gradually.

Twin-tube pistons have separate paths for compression and rebound, which is the whole point of the design.
