Nine Hundred Cubic Centimetres
The smaller of the modern Bonneville twins, with sixty-five horsepower and a torque curve that arrives immediately. It is deliberately unhurried.
Wire Wheels and Chrome
Triumph builds the T100 to look like the motorcycle it is named after, and the details are done properly rather than approximated with stickers.
Air Injection, Briefly
Triumph feeds fresh air into the exhaust ports on a shut throttle so unburnt fuel finishes burning after the cylinder. The measurement improves and the engine notices nothing.
Where Triumph Puts It
Usually under the tank alongside the airbox, reached with the seat and the tank off. It is not difficult to get to and it is not obvious until you look.
Soot in the Airbox
A cracked reed lets exhaust gas travel back up the hose, and the residue coats the filter. It is usually discovered while looking for something else entirely.
What Actually Happens on a Closed Throttle
The engine is still turning, the injectors have stopped and a good deal of unburnt mixture is being pushed into the header. Fresh air arriving there finds it and finishes the job at a temperature high enough to make the process audible. Removing the air supply removes the reaction rather than muffling it.
Three Cylinders Make It Louder
A triple collects three exhaust pulses into a single volume, and residue burning in that volume produces a sharper report than a twin manages. It is part of why Triumph owners discuss this more than owners of other marques.
A Modification Almost Nobody Regrets
Of all the changes made to a modern Triumph triple, this is the one owners are least likely to reverse. It costs little, it takes an evening, it cures a noise that irritated them and it leaves the motorcycle exactly as capable as it was. The only argument against it is a legal one.
Fitted With the Airbox Open
Anybody already inside for a filter change has the connector in front of them, which makes this the cheapest twenty minutes on the whole service list.
