DescriptionThe whole story▼
The BN 251 is a small single-cylinder naked bike from Benelli, the old Italian marque from Pesaro, and for many riders it is an early step onto a full-size motorcycle. Learning to use its front brake well is mostly about the hand, and a lever that fits the hand is a good place to start. The Accossato EDF016 replaces the BN 251's original front brake lever. It is CNC-machined from aluminium, fits the original master cylinder and can be brought closer to the grip, which helps smaller hands. Accossato lists it for 2016 and 2017.
Key Features
- For the Benelli BN 251, model years 2016 and 2017
- Replaces the front brake lever on the original master cylinder
- Adjustable distance to the grip, useful for smaller hands
- Standard blade about 138 mm long in all seven colours
- Short blade in blue, gold, green, orange and silver
- CNC-machined aluminium, anodised, with black hub
- Fixed lever with no folding joint
Construction and Material Quality
CNC stands for computer numerical control: the cutter follows a programmed path, and every lever that comes off the machine has the same outline. Accossato uses that process to shape the EDF016 from solid aluminium and then anodises it. On every version the hub is black, while the blade comes in the colour you order. The hub contains the pivot and the reach adjuster, and the blade is a single rigid piece without a hinge, as the EDF016 is a fixed lever. On a light bike whose controls are always in view, that neat two-tone finish is one of the details that make a cockpit look looked after.
Where the Thumb Goes
Riders new to a strong front disc brake often make the same move in a sudden stop: they open the whole hand to reach the lever, and the thumb leaves the grip. For a moment the right hand holds nothing but the lever, which is exactly when the bike needs steady steering. Riding instructors teach the opposite. Thumb and palm stay wrapped around the grip, and the fingers come forward to the lever. That only works if the blade is within reach of the fingers without stretching, and on a standard lever that can be a problem for smaller hands. The EDF016's adjuster moves the blade closer to the grip. Set it so that the first joints of your fingers rest on the blade while the hand is relaxed. Then practise stopping from low speed in an empty car park, squeezing progressively, until the movement is automatic. On the BN 251, those few minutes of practice pay back on every ride.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the EDF016 for the BN 251 in 2016 and 2017. The lever mounts on the original front brake master cylinder in place of the standard lever. For the clutch side, Accossato makes the ESD037, which covers the same two model years.
Road Approval
Not approved for German roads: there is no documented ABE for the EDF016, and it is sold for the track.
