DescriptionThe whole story▼

Inkrider is the Skwal Cup's own graphic language rather than a licensed livery: a spread of ink-like strokes breaking across the shell in black with a pale light-blue accent, printed under a matte finish rather than gloss. It's built for a rider who wants the aerodynamic shell and the certification underneath without wearing someone else's racing history on their head.

What you actually feel at speed

Take the helmet off the shelf and the spoiler at the back looks like styling. Put it on at 110 km/h with no screen ahead of you and it stops being decoration: the difference between a shell that lets air separate cleanly off the back and one that lets it tumble is the difference between a helmet that sits still on your neck and one that tugs and buffets with every gust. Shark shaped the Skwal Cup's rear end with computational fluid-dynamics modelling and confirmed the result in a wind tunnel specifically to chase that calmness, borrowing the approach from its track helmets rather than inventing a road-specific shortcut.

Matte, and what that means day to day

A matte shell doesn't show fine scuffs the way a gloss one does — a dropped glove, a careless set-down on a kerb, a helmet-bag zip catching the shell, all mark a gloss finish more visibly than a matte one. The trade-off runs the other way for cleaning: gloss wipes clean of bug spatter and road grime with less effort than matte, which holds onto fine dirt a little longer. For a helmet spending most of its life commuting, Inkrider's matte surface is the more forgiving of the two finishes Shark offers on this line.

The regulation behind the certificate

  • Eighteen impact points struck, not five — the old ECE 22.05 test left most of the shell unchecked
  • Multiple impact speeds per test, not a single fixed speed
  • An oblique-impact test against an abrasive anvil, simulating a glancing, twisting fall rather than a clean vertical drop
  • A Brain Injury Criterion scoring rotational forces, alongside the older linear-deceleration measurement
  • Visor, Pinlock insert and a communications unit fitted during testing — not a bare shell

This has been mandatory for newly homologated EU helmets since January 2024. The Skwal Cup's certification reads 2206, with no FIM competition suffix.

Ventilation layout

Air comes in through a single front intake and leaves through two rear exhaust vents — a simple path rather than a multi-vent maze, keeping the shell's surface clean for the spoiler's aerodynamic work.

The number that matters at hour four, not minute one

No one notices a helmet's weight in the car park. They notice it four hours into a ride, when the neck muscles that have been holding a static load the whole time start to complain. Shark's 1,580 g (+/-50 g) figure for the Skwal Cup is quoted on the smallest shell — S and M sizes sit close to it, while L to XXL, built on the larger shell, will run somewhat heavier for the same helmet. Most full-face road helmets across our own range weigh somewhere between roughly 1,250 g and 1,800 g; this one sits toward the middle rather than at either extreme.

Interior comfort

The liner is removable and machine washable, made from a suede-finish antibacterial material intended to stay comfortable through repeated wear rather than just the first few rides. It comes out in a couple of minutes without tools.

Wind noise, honestly

We don't have a decibel figure for this helmet and won't invent one. What's built in is a perimeter seal around the visor aperture and a chin curtain at the base of the shell, both aimed at closing the air gaps that generate most of the noise a rider hears at speed. How quiet any specific ride feels also depends on the bike's screen and the rider's position, which is why a single number wouldn't tell the whole story.

Sizing across two shells

Six sizes cover XS to XXL, split across the Skwal Cup's two shells rather than stretched over one moulding — the smaller sizes stay compact, the larger sizes keep proper shell coverage.

Four helmets, one ladder

  • Ridill 2 — from €189.99
  • D-Skwal 3 — from €219.99
  • Skwal Cup, this decor — €319.99
  • Skwal i3 — from €319.99 to €399.99 by decor
  • Skwal i Cup — from €329.99

The two lines above the Skwal Cup add an LED brake-light system this one doesn't carry — the main reason their starting prices sit close to or above it.

Keeping it running

A scuffed or scratched visor doesn't retire this helmet: Shark lists Skwal Cup visors in the same spare-parts collection as the Ridill 2, D-Skwal 3 and Skwal i3, so the one part that wears fastest is straightforward to replace direct from the manufacturer.

Before you buy, not after

  • No LED brake light — that's the Skwal i3 and Skwal i Cup, not this helmet
  • No SHARP star rating for the Skwal Cup specifically — SHARP has tested the Skwal, Skwal 2 and D-Skwal, not the Cup
  • ECE 22.06 only, no FIM competition suffix
  • No MIPS liner
  • No electronic quick-release system (EQRS)
  • No tear-off posts on the visor

Who this decor suits

Inkrider is the pick for a rider who wants the Skwal Cup's aerodynamic shell and the road certification behind it without a rider's name or a national flag attached — a helmet that reads as its own design rather than a tribute to someone else's season. The light-blue-on-black palette keeps it identifiable without being loud, which suits daily commuting better than a full-colour replica livery typically does.

It's also the decor least likely to need explaining to anyone who asks about it in a car park, since there's no rider or race to reference — just the shell and the graphic on it.
