People who prepare motorcycles for long journeys tend to share one rule: nothing new goes on the bike in the final week. New parts want to be ridden before they are relied upon, and a fault found at home costs an evening, while the same fault found two thousand kilometres out can cost the trip. The air filter is the easiest item on the whole preparation list to get right, because the SM256T12 can be fitted a season early and looked at as often as you like without costing anything to do so.
Key Features
- A deep dry mat of polyester non-woven, filtering to 7 µm rather than to a woven aperture
- 560 l/m²/sec of rated flow: highest retention, lowest flow, the extremes of the range
- Never oiled and never impregnated, in the airbox or anywhere behind it
- Roughly twice the filtering surface of other performance elements in the series box
- Goes into the standard housing unaltered — nothing cut, nothing recalibrated
- Regenerated with an air line and refitted, made for the life of the machine, two-year warranty
Fitted early, opened often
The worth of a lifetime element on a machine like the Rally Explorer is not only what it holds back. It is that inspecting it costs nothing, so the inspection actually happens. Fit it well before departure, ride the bike as usual, then open the airbox one evening and look — at the element, at the sealing face, at the housing around it. Do that twice before you leave and the job stops being something you would rather not attempt for the first time at a campsite in failing light, which is exactly where it would otherwise be attempted.
Why the extreme medium suits this bike
The Rally is the version Triumph built for loose ground, and loose ground is what this medium is for: a deep dry mat filtering to 7 µm, rated at 560 l/m²/sec where the standard weave manages 5,050. More retention, less flow, always in that order — an exchange rather than an upgrade, and on the tarmac stages of a trip you carry the cost of it. None of this adds noticeable power to a standard 1200 triple. What the medium decides is what gets past it on the days when the air is at its worst, and on this motorcycle those are the days it was bought for.
Care and cleaning
Service it at the end of a dirty day rather than the start of the next one: an air line held to the clean side, patiently, until the mat gives up its load. If the dirt arrived wet, wash the element in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear. A dense mat needs genuine drying time in moving air, and never any heat or flame to speed it along; it goes back only when dry. There is no oiling step. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally and its Pro and Explorer versions from 2023 to 2026. The same element covers one other listing, the Tiger 1200 GT range, which uses the identical airbox. Confirm your version and model year in the Fitment tab before ordering.
