On a green lane the dirtiest air of the day is rarely the air you make. It is the air made by whoever is in front of you. Ride a Scrambler 1200 alone across dry ground and the dust mostly stays behind the rear wheel; ride it third in a line of five and the intake spends the morning in somebody else's plume. Nothing about that is under the rider's control except the choice of when to hang back, and nobody hangs back for an hour. That is the situation the PM218P14 is specified for.
Key Features
- Dry special non-woven medium rated at 14 microns, used entirely without oil
- Rated flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec, against 5,050 l/m²/sec for the standard P08
- Finer means more held back and less passed through: a trade between two properties, not a ranking
- Around twice the media area of a conventional sports element
- Fits the standard airbox in the original position: no cutting, no brackets, no fuelling change
- Regenerated with compressed air instead of replaced; two years' warranty from purchase
Your position in the group chooses your air
Dust exposure on unsurfaced ground is not distributed evenly among riders, and it is not distributed by skill either. The lead bike breathes what the day provides. Everyone behind breathes that plus the fraction still hanging in the air from the wheels ahead — heaviest in still weather, worst on the fine, powdery surfaces that look harmless. A rider who is usually out alone can specify for the ground. A rider who travels in company is specifying for a condition that arrives whether or not the route is dusty, and a 14-micron medium is a reasonable answer to it.
What the fine medium costs on a 1200 twin
It costs airflow, and the figure is not small: 1,800 l/m²/sec against the 5,050 of the P08. On a large-capacity twin that does its work low in the rev range this is a more comfortable trade than it would be on a high-revving engine, but it is still a trade. What it is not is a power upgrade — no element dropped into a standard airbox makes a Scrambler 1200 stronger, and a finer one least of all. The gain is a lower and more stable intake restriction over the service interval, and a filter that is cleaned rather than bought again.
Care and cleaning
After a dusty ride, out it comes. Compressed air over the inner, clean face so the dust is pushed back out the way it arrived, then a look through the pleats against a light. Lukewarm water with a little mild detergent for what will not shift dry, rinsed until the water runs clear. Dry it in open air, never with heat, a hot air gun or a flame, and refit it only when it is completely dry and untreated. The cleaning sheet for the PM218P14 is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
The P14 element for the Triumph Scrambler 1200 XC and XE, model years 2019 to 2026 — both variants on the same airbox. For ground that is worse than dusty, the same housing also accepts the T12, a 7-micron medium at 560 l/m²/sec built for extreme conditions.
