Every service schedule carries a line telling you when to replace the air filter, and that figure was worked out for a component with exactly one direction of travel. A paper panel starts at its best and declines from there, so the only sensible instruction to print is a distance at which it goes in the bin. Fit a washable element to an NK 800 and the line stops describing anything at all. There is nothing left to replace, and what takes its place is not a number but a habit somebody has to keep.

From a printed figure to a rhythm

The replacement mileage in a manual is doing two jobs at once: it estimates when a panel is spent, and it forces the box open on a schedule so somebody actually looks. Only the first job disappears when the panel becomes washable. The second still matters, and it now belongs to the owner rather than to the workshop. In practice the rhythm is easy to build, because checking costs nothing but the time to lift the cover: look once at the end of a dusty spell, once before a long trip, once before the bike is put away for winter, and the interval writes itself out of what you find.

What the weave is actually offering

Not power. A drop-in element does not make a standard NK 800 noticeably stronger, and a page that suggests otherwise is selling something the part cannot deliver. The offer is a lower intake restriction that stays near its starting value across the whole interval rather than creeping up unannounced, plus a component that returns to a known condition instead of being consumed. On a naked middleweight ridden all year, in traffic as much as anywhere, that steadiness is worth more than any single figure on the data sheet.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air on the clean face, worked outwards, is the standard service and returns the dry load the way it came in. Sticky deposits — insects, road film, the grey layer that city riding leaves — need lukewarm water with a mild detergent and a rinse until the water runs clear.
