Three current BMW models carry the 1300 boxer, and it is tempting to assume that an engine of that size breathes through one part wherever it is installed. The catalogue says otherwise. The R 1300 R and the R 1300 RS share this number; the R 1300 GS, with the same displacement and the same cylinder layout, takes a different one and a physically different element, priced roughly a third above this one. An airbox is not a component of an engine. It belongs to the motorcycle built around the engine, and that is the first thing to understand about SM294S.
Key Features
- One layer of dry woven polyester, filtration rated at 80 microns
- 5,050 l/m²/sec, the reference flow figure across the range
- Completely oil-free, so intake sensors stay out of the argument
- Roughly twice the filtering surface of a typical performance filter
- Fits the series airbox as delivered; no cutting, no remap
- Cleaned and refitted many times over; two-year warranty
Why the frame decides, not the engine
Because the box has to live where the motorcycle leaves room for it. A roadster puts its airbox under a slim tail and a narrow tank tunnel; a big adventure machine hands its box a different volume and a different intake path entirely. Displacement has no vote in that. What travels with the engine family is the demand for air; what decides the shape and area of the element is the space above the cylinders. So the R and the RS, near-identical under their differing bodywork, share one number, and the GS does not.
The medium, and what it is worth on this bike
The P08 weave screens at 80 microns and flows 5,050 l/m²/sec. Those numbers are two ends of a single lever: a finer cloth catches more and passes less, a coarser one passes more and catches less, and moving along that lever is an exchange rather than an upgrade. Measured retention for this weave is 93.13 per cent of 100-micron particles, where a four-layer oiled cotton returned 76.42 per cent. None of that makes a standard R 1300 R noticeably stronger, and no honest description of an airbox insert claims it does. What it does is hold intake resistance closer to its starting value across a service interval, and end the habit of buying a panel each time.
Care and cleaning
SM294S is serviced with compressed air directed at the clean face and blown outward, so the load leaves the way it came in. Lukewarm water and a mild detergent are the fallback after a heavy season, rinsed until the water runs clear. Then it dries in moving air at its own pace: no heat gun, no flame, no radiator, because heat deforms the weave and ends the part far sooner than any road will. It is refitted dry and never oiled. The maintenance sheet lives in the Downloads tab of this page.
Fitment & Compatibility
Sprint Filter lists this number for two machines, the BMW R 1300 R and the R 1300 RS, both from 2025 to 2026, as a direct replacement in the unmodified airbox. The R 1300 GS is deliberately not on that list. The Fitment tab names both covered machines with their year spans.
