Short and Dark

Length and colour pull in the same direction here. A shorter can already draws less attention than a long one, and taking the brightness out of it as well leaves the silencer as a shape you notice rather than a surface you look at.

On a spoked, chrome-mudguarded T100 that is a strong combination. It is also the closest of the six to what a period racer would have run: cans that were there to do a job, not to be admired.

The Bonneville Black Question

Triumph sold plenty of T100s with blacked-out engines and dark paint, and on those the choice makes itself. On a chrome-heavy Spirit or a two-tone tank the decision is less obvious, and it is worth holding the bike in your head before ordering: black pipes make a bright motorcycle look brighter by contrast, not darker.

What Does Not Change

The body is the same Sinfonia shape as GTR0206I — fuller through the middle, tapering to a smaller outlet, finishing forward of the rear axle. Same weight, same mounting, same fit around a rack or panniers. The ceramic treatment is the whole difference and it costs 156 euro.

Care in One Line

No degreasers and nothing from a car-wash shelf. Warm water and a mild soap keep a ceramic surface even; harsh chemistry makes it patchy, and patchy black is worse than no black at all.

Three Fifty a Side

Spark gives 3.5 kg for the pair. The standard T100 silencers are heavier steel cans with more internal baffling, so the change is felt as much in how the bike falls into a corner as in what it weighs on paper.

On a machine of this kind that is a secondary argument, though. Nobody buys a Bonneville exhaust for the lap time.

Sold as a Pair

A Bonneville has a silencer on each side and Spark supplies both. Fitting one and leaving the other standard is possible and looks exactly as odd as it sounds, so the article covers the machine rather than a side of it.

Installation

Slip-on level: the standard silencers come off and Spark's go on in their place, with the header pipes untouched. On a T100 that is a bolt-on afternoon rather than a workshop job.
