DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 08434-60 is a pair of fork springs rated at 6.0 N/mm, 445 mm long with a 41 mm inner diameter. Getting the rate right restores the static sag the chassis was designed around.

Key Features

  • Supplied as a pair
  • Measured spring rate 6.0 N/mm
  • Tapered-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 445 mm
  • 260 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 41 mm
  • Öhlins part number 08434-60

Why the Rate Holds

The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 445 mm and the inner diameter at 41 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 6.0 N/mm

A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Applications

Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.

Installation

Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
