DescriptionThe whole story▼

Mountain hairpins show what a rear brake is worth. On a Kawasaki Z500, a light touch on the pedal in the middle of a tight bend steadies the bike and tightens its line in a way the front brake cannot. Accossato's DK271 is a fixed rear disc for the Z500, listed from 2024 to 2026. It is made of steel in one piece, 220 mm in diameter and 5 mm thick, and it takes the place of the original disc.

Key Features

  • Fixed rear disc for the Kawasaki Z500, 2024 to 2026
  • Steel, in one piece, from Accossato's off-road family
  • 220 mm outer diameter, 100 mm inner diameter
  • 5 mm thick; three 10.5 mm holes on a 120 mm circle
  • Interchangeable with the original equipment disc
  • Minimum working thickness printed on the disc
  • No German ABE documented; for track use

Construction and Material Quality

Accossato's DK271 is a rigid disc: the braking band and the mounting centre are one steel part, as Accossato says, with nothing riveted between them. It belongs to the company's range of fixed discs for off-road machines and takes the place of the original rear disc on the Z500. The outer diameter is 220 mm, the inner 100 mm, the thickness 5 mm, and the three holes of 10.5 mm sit on a 120 mm hole circle. The company prints the minimum thickness on the disc and advises replacing a disc once it gets there, or once it shows scoring or cracks.

Hairpins and the Rear Brake

In a slow, tight hairpin the front brake is the wrong tool: with the bars turned and the bike leaned over, a squeeze of the front lever makes the bike stand up and run wide. The rear brake works the other way. Dragged lightly while you keep a little throttle on, it keeps the chassis settled, sheds speed without upsetting the steering and helps the Z500 turn more tightly around the inside of the bend.

On a downhill hairpin this is particularly useful. Do most of the braking with both brakes while the bike is still upright, then release the front before you lean in and carry a trace of rear brake through the apex. Look through the bend to where you want to go, not at the barrier. Finding the right pedal pressure takes practice, and a rear disc in good condition makes it easier, since a warped or badly scored disc makes the brake grab and release instead of dragging evenly. Before a trip into the mountains, check the rear disc of your Z500 for wear and grooves.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the DK271 for the Kawasaki Z500 from 2024 to 2026. Its EDF025 brake lever is also listed for the Z500, while a front disc for this model is not on the list. Tighten the bolts to the values in Kawasaki's manual, and bed the disc in gently with fresh pads.

Road Approval

No German ABE or type approval is documented for this disc, which is offered for competition and circuit use.

Scope of Delivery
