DescriptionThe whole story▼
Sand over black is the Primal family's earth-toned version and the most restrained of the two desert finishes here — two values rather than three, with the black doing the structural work.
Peak, aperture and the adventure compromise
Adventure is the most cross-shopped helmet category there is, and the honest advice is to be precise about your own riding rather than aspirational about it. Most adventure bikes spend most of their lives on tarmac.
🔵 If yours does, the removable peak and the quieter road configuration matter more than the off-road capability. The Y.TRAVL is built for exactly that balance.
About the Primal Sand Grey graphic
A two-value earth scheme is easier to live with than a three-value one, because there is less to weather unevenly. The sand areas hide dust by being its colour; the black areas hide road film and spray. Between them this is the finish most likely to look the same at the end of a two-week trip as at the beginning, which on a helmet that will not be washed daily matters more than it sounds. 🔵 The trade is the usual one for earth tones: low conspicuity in flat northern light, where a mid-saturation beige reads as part of the background rather than against it.
Polyfusion, two shells and four approvals
🔵 If you are comparing inexpensive adventure helmets, the questions worth asking are which ECE revision the helmet holds, how many shell sizes the range uses, and whether the anti-fog lens is included.
The Y.TRAVL answers those as 22-06, two, and yes — a Pinlock 70 MaxVision lens is supplied.
The visor, the wide eye port and the second shield
🔵 Keep the supplied second visor somewhere it will not be scratched. A loose visor in a pannier is a scratched visor within a week, and a scratched visor flares badly against headlights at night.
The clear visor is optical class 1 with an anti-scratch coating; the second is an 80 % smoke tint.
The sun visor and its glove-friendly button
🔵 With the shield down and the outer visor closed you are looking through two surfaces, and any scratch or fog on either becomes visible. That is true of every helmet with an internal sun visor and it is worth knowing.
Keep both clean. The Y.TRAVL's shield blocks 99 % of ultraviolet and retracts fully.
Two intakes, four exhausts — and a zero-degree measurement
The complete ventilation specification is short: two intakes, four exhausts and channels in the EPS routing air around the head. The complete measured result is equally short and rather better: a zero-degree interior delta and a 4/5 score.
🔵 That is the best ventilation result of any Nexx helmet independently tested by the same reviewer.
How loud it actually is
🔵 Everything that makes the Y.TRAVL work as an adventure helmet makes it louder than a road one: the peak, the exceptionally wide aperture and the ventilation. The removable peak exists so you can unwind part of that on a motorway day.
Measured with peak and visor fitted: around 102 dB, scored 3 out of 5.
Interior, retention and fit
🔵 Why emergency cheek-pad release matters: the cheek pads are what hold a helmet on your head once the strap is undone, which is why they have to come out before a full-face can be removed from an injured rider safely.
The Emergency-Strap pulls on this helmet let a first responder do exactly that, without tools.
Around 1.8 kilograms, and the rest of the honest list
Weight is the one specification this helmet clearly loses on, and it loses for a structural reason: a thermoplastic shell needs more material than a composite, and an adventure helmet carries a peak and a sun visor mechanism on top of that.
🔵 1805 g measured in size M. Everything else about the helmet is better than the price suggests.
What is in the box, comms and spare parts
🔵 Replacement cheek pads are the most useful spare part on any helmet and the least often bought. They correct a fit that has loosened with wear and solve a hot spot that would otherwise mean a different helmet entirely.
Genuine Nexx pads for the Y.TRAVL are stocked, along with crown pads and chin-strap covers.
