Gloss black is the most-bought finish on any entry-level helmet and the one that asks nothing of you. Nothing about it competes with the scooter, and nothing about it dates.

What an open-face helmet does and does not do

🔵 The honest paragraph, and it matters more on the cheapest helmet in the range than anywhere else: this helmet protects the skull, not the face. No certification changes what is physically absent.

MT's Stinger 2 full-face costs 38 € more and covers your jaw. That is the single largest protective upgrade available at this end of the market.

About the gloss black finish

On a 47-euro helmet the finish is the most visible place a manufacturer can economise, and gloss black is the least forgiving colour to get right — every ripple in the moulding shows in the reflection. That the Street S carries it cleanly is one of the reasons it has stayed in MT's catalogue since 2016. The maintenance is the standard gloss-black bargain and it cuts both ways: road film against dark clear coat is maximum contrast, dry-wiping leaves permanent swirls, and washing wet with a clean cloth afterwards does not. 🔵 It is also the least conspicuous version here, on a helmet aimed squarely at city traffic. If this is a daily commuting helmet rather than an occasional one, the white does more for you and costs the same. On the other hand, gloss black is the finish that ages most gracefully on a plain dome: no graphic to date, no trim colour to fade, and nothing about it that will look wrong in five years. For a helmet bought to be used rather than admired, that counts for something — and on a model MT has kept in production since 2016, choosing the least fashionable finish is arguably the most consistent decision available. Wash it wet, dry it with a clean cloth, and it will still look tidy when the five-year replacement date arrives. One practical note specific to this finish: because the Street S has no removable liner, the shell is the part you will actually be cleaning, and gloss black is the surface that shows a careless job most clearly. Use plenty of water and a clean cloth, and never take a dry one to it.

The cheapest helmet MT makes — and what that means

🔵 At 47 € the only question that matters is whether the certification is current, and here it is: ECE 22.06 plus DOT. A great many helmets at this price are still sold against the superseded 22.05, which uses fewer impact points, lower test speeds and no rotational assessment.

That is the whole case for this helmet over a cheaper one.

What this helmet does not have

🔵 The missing removable interior is the one that will affect you most over time. A liner that cannot be taken out cannot be properly washed, and a jet's padding collects road dust as well as sweat.

MT's Viale SV S at 72 € has a fully removable washable interior, and that alone is a reasonable argument for the extra 25 €.

HIRP, 1025 grams, ECE 22.06 and DOT

🔵 At around 1 kg this is a helmet you stop noticing within minutes, and on a scooter used for short errands that matters more than any other specification. It is roughly 175 g under MT's Viale SV S and 475 g under the Cosmo SV.

Every gram of that difference is equipment the Street S does not carry.

The long MT-V-15B visor

🔵 The long visor is arguably the best thing about this helmet. On a jet the face is exposed by definition, and the difference between a short screen and a deep one is the difference between usable in drizzle and not.

The clear MT-V-15B is fitted as standard.

The MT-Micrometric+ closure

🔵 A micrometric ratchet is the right closure for an urban jet, because you use it more than on any other helmet type — on and off at every shop, every stop, every errand.

Correct tension: one finger under the strap with the helmet on, and no more.

Cleaning a helmet with a fixed liner

🔵 A non-removable liner is the Street S's biggest practical limitation over years of use. It cannot be machine-washed, so the interior will age faster than on a helmet whose lining comes out.

Airing the helmet after every ride — rather than putting it straight in a top box — does more for it than anything else you can do.

Choosing the right size

🔵 Fit is the specification that matters most and the one no description can settle for you — particularly on a helmet whose liner cannot be removed and swapped for a different thickness.

What you buy is what you wear. Try it on, keep it on for ten minutes, and pay attention to where it presses.

If the helmet will be worn daily rather than occasionally, it is worth spending.

🔵 On a helmet with a fixed interior, the visor is the only serviceable part that matters — which makes looking after it more important than on a helmet where everything comes out.

Never wipe it dry; road dust is abrasive and leaves permanent scratches.
