It helps to picture the range as one dial rather than a shelf of rival products. Turn it one way and the medium grows coarser and passes more; turn it the other and it holds back more and passes less. For this airbox the dial has a coarse setting at 80 microns and 5,050 litres per square metre per second, a fine setting at 14 and 1,800, and beyond that an extreme setting at 7 and 560. The SM277P14 is the middle one, and the middle is where a road-registered motorcycle usually belongs.

Three settings on one dial

The steps are not evenly spaced, and that is the useful part. Moving from 80 microns to 14 costs a large share of the rated flow. Moving on from 14 to 7 costs most of what remains. Every step is bought with the same currency, and the further along the dial you go the dearer that currency gets. Nothing here is better than anything else; each setting describes a kind of air, and the last one describes air with visible material hanging in it.

Why a road bike stops here

A ZT 350-V spends its life on surfaced roads with occasional dust rather than in permanent dust, and that is precisely the case the middle setting is drawn for: fine enough to be worth having on dry summer lanes and in the wake of traffic, not so fine that flow is paid for every day of the year against a threat that shows up on only some of them. Going further would mean paying an extreme-conditions price for road conditions. In neither direction is any of this a power modification — a drop-in element does not make a standard ZT 350-V stronger, and this one spent flow rather than found it.

Care and cleaning

Servicing is compressed air held to the clean side and blown outward through the material, so the load departs the way it came. Greasy build-up lifts with lukewarm water and a mild detergent and a full rinse afterwards. Drying is by circulating air at ambient temperature only, well away from any heat source or flame, and the SM277P14 is refitted dry with nothing added to it.
