A Tracer's kilometres are not spread evenly over the year. Ask an owner where they came from and the answer is April to September: the Alpine week, the long weekends, the evening rides. Most of a sport-tourer's annual air intake happens inside a few months — and those are the dirtiest months on the calendar. The SM212P14 is chosen against that season: a special nonwoven used dry, filtering at 14 microns instead of the 80 microns of the standard P08 weave, and flowing 1,800 litres per square metre per second where the P08 moves 5,050.
Key Features
- Special nonwoven filter medium, run dry, rated at 14 microns of filtration
- Airflow of 1,800 litres per square metre per second, deliberately below the P08's 5,050, because retention is paid for in flow
- No oil at any point in its life, so the intake sensors stay clear of anything shed by the filter
- Made to the standard airbox of the 2021–2024 Tracer 9 and Tracer 9 GT; it swaps straight for the factory element, with no remapping
- Cleaned and refitted season after season instead of replaced, with a service life meant to match the bike's own
- Sprint Filter backs the element for two years after purchase
Why a touring year is a dirty year
Nobody plans a route around air quality, but the riding season writes its own. Late spring puts pollen and seed fluff into every valley. July and August put agricultural traffic on the same back roads that make a Tracer worth owning, and a combine working a field beside the road fills the air with fine chaff for hours. Resurfacing gangs work in the dry months too, and loose chippings stay long after the signs come down. A medium rated at 80 microns lets a real share of that fine fraction past in exchange for flow, and on a bike whose year is compressed into those weeks the finer mat is the better bargain.
Volume, not only speed
Distance changes the arithmetic as well. A seven-hundred-kilometre day at touring pace pushes a volume of air through the airbox that a commuting week never approaches, in one sitting, in whatever the route is carrying. The other side deserves saying plainly: if your Tracer 9 is mostly a fast solo road bike on swept main roads and you want every last bit of headroom at the top of the rev range, the P08 at 80 microns and 5,050 litres is the better balanced part. Finer is not higher up a ranking; it answers a different question.
Care and cleaning
Servicing the SM212P14 needs no oil and no dosing, because the medium is dry by design. Lift the element out and pass compressed air through it from the clean side, so the dirt is pushed back out the way it went in. For heavier deposits, lukewarm water and a little mild detergent will do. Let it dry fully in open air — never with heat or a naked flame — and put it back dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the Yamaha Tracer 9 and Tracer 9 GT built from 2021 to 2024. Three machines of this generation share the airbox and therefore this element — the Tracer 9 / GT, the MT-09 / SP and the XSR 900 — with the complete list in the Fitment tab.
