Almost everything on a current BMW roadster can be changed after the fact. Throttle response, damping, traction control, engine braking, the shift assistant, even the instrument layout: all of it sits behind a menu and can be set differently at the next set of lights. The air filter is the exception. Whatever medium is stretched across the frame in the airbox behaves the same way in every riding mode, and the only way to change its behaviour is to order a different part number. SM294P14 is one of the three answers to that single, unrepeatable question.
Key Features
- Technical nonwoven, dry throughout, filtering at 14 microns
- Bench flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec, the fine end of this housing
- No oil to dose, spread or replace after washing
- Around twice the filtering area of an ordinary sports element
- Series airbox, series position, no modification and no remap
- Cleaned with compressed air and reused; two years of warranty
The setting that is not a setting
A riding mode changes how the motorcycle answers you. The filter medium changes what reaches the engine, all the time, in every mode, whether the bike is at walking pace in traffic or at the top of third gear. There is no soft version of 14 microns and no sport version of it. That permanence is the reason the choice deserves a few minutes rather than a shrug: it is made once, by part number, and then it simply runs. It is also completely reversible in the mechanical sense, since all three media for this housing share one shape and one mounting.
What the fine end costs and returns
The exchange is stated plainly by the numbers. Against the standard weave for this airbox, the P14 screens at 14 microns instead of 80, and flows 1,800 l/m²/sec instead of 5,050. Finer means more held back and less passed through, coarser means the reverse, and no point on that line is the best one; there is only the point that matches the roads you use. Gravel access tracks, dry farmland in high summer and long stretches of roadworks are the case for the fine end. Nothing here makes a standard R 1300 R noticeably stronger, and the P14 in particular is chosen for what it keeps out. In price it asks a little over seven tenths of what the standard element costs.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air on the clean face of SM294P14, blown outward, releases what the nonwoven has collected. Because this medium loads in depth rather than on the surface, a visual check tells you very little; work to an interval instead. Water and a mild detergent handle anything air leaves behind. Dry it only in moving air, never with heat and never near an open flame, and refit it dry, with no oil of any kind. The full maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Covers two machines: the BMW R 1300 R and the R 1300 RS, both 2025 to 2026, as a direct replacement in the unmodified series airbox. The R 1300 GS uses a separate Sprint Filter number despite sharing the engine family. The Fitment tab lists both covered models with their years.
