On an inexpensive motorcycle the arithmetic of servicing is not a footnote, it is a large share of what the machine costs to own. A disposable air filter is bought again at every interval, for as long as the XSR 155 is kept. The Sprint Filter P08 PM198S ends that particular line in the ledger. It is a woven polyester element designed to last the life of the motorcycle: it is cleaned with compressed air, washed when it needs more than that, and refitted — the same piece, service after service, with a two-year warranty behind it.
Key Features
- Dry P08 polyester and no oil in the process: none to buy, none to dose, none to get wrong
- 80 microns of filtration, 5,050 litres per square metre per second of airflow
- Filtering area comes to roughly double that of other performance filters
- It takes the place of the original in the standard airbox — nothing modified, nothing remapped, homologation as it was
- Washable and reusable, and designed to last the life of the motorcycle
- Purchase starts a two-year warranty period
The consumable that stops being one
Over ten years of ordinary use an XSR 155 will pass a great many service points, and a paper element is a fresh purchase at each of them. A washable element is bought once. That is the whole of the financial case, and it is deliberately modest: no promise of extra power, because a filter in a standard airbox does not deliver any. What it delivers is a lower and more consistent intake resistance across the interval, and one fewer part on the shopping list.
Dry, because oil is another purchase and another risk
Oiled cotton gauze needs its oil renewed correctly every time it is cleaned. Too much oil, and the surplus sits where the engine measures its air. The P08 has no such step: polyester threads of 22 microns and upwards, woven into a single dry layer and regenerated with an air line. Sprint Filter's own comparison puts a four-layer oiled cotton filter at 76.42 per cent retention of 100-micron test particles against 93.13 per cent for the dry P08. Where the conditions justify it, finer media are available — P037 at 37 microns, P14 at 14 — at the cost of flow, 5,050 litres per square metre per second for the P08 against 4,500 and 1,800. Finer holds more and passes less; it is a trade, not a ranking.
Care and cleaning
The routine is short because there is nothing to oil at the end of it. Blow the element out with compressed air from the clean side; wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent if the air line leaves dirt behind, rinsing until the water runs clear; then let it dry in the open, right through, with no heat and no flame anywhere in the process. It is refitted dry. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha XSR 155, 2019 to 2026, and a direct replacement in the standard airbox. The same PM198S element serves seven machines built around this airbox, across the 125 and 155 versions of the engine; the full list is in the Fitment tab.
