DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00480-12 is a shock absorber spring rated at 16-26 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Free length 230 mm
  • Progressively wound
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • 130 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 00480-12
  • Measured spring rate 16-26 N/mm (progressive)

How Öhlins Makes Them

Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.

Size and Rate

Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 230 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 16-26 N/mm.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering.

Applications

Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.

Installation

Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
