DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 08785-28 is a pair of fork springs rated at 2.8 N/mm, 450 mm long with a 32.8 mm inner diameter. A fork that is sprung wrong uses up its travel before the damping has a chance to work.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 08785-28
  • 280 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 2.8 N/mm
  • Supplied as a pair
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 32.8 mm
  • Free length 450 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.

Dimensions

The 32.8 mm bore and 450 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 2.8 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Where This Rate Belongs

Öhlins goes this soft only where the linkage ratio or the rider weight genuinely calls for it. A very soft rate uses more of the stroke, which is usually what an off-road chassis wants. Soft rates like this are what off-road and adventure forks need: the wheel has to follow the ground, not deflect off it. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Applications

Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.

Fitting

If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
