A parked motorcycle still has an open intake. Nothing is being drawn through it, but an airbox is not a sealed container: it breathes with every change of temperature, and it collects whatever settles out of the air around it. Standing still is a load case of its own

Storage does two things to an intake. Dust settles onto a surface that has no airflow to carry it off again, so it stays where it lands. And humidity cycles: air in the box warms and cools daily, and moisture condenses and evaporates on whatever is inside. Paper responds to that badly, because wetted fibres swell and do not return to their original spacing when they dry. A polyester weave is designed to be wetted and dried, which is precisely why washing it is a procedure rather than an accident.

Clean it going in, not coming out

The useful habit is the reverse of the common one. An element cleaned before the machine is laid up spends the standing months with a clear weave, and the first ride of the season starts from the low end of the restriction curve rather than the high one. That habit only forms if it is free, which is the whole argument for a washable part: nothing has to be ordered in advance, so nothing gets postponed. It is not a power modification. A drop-in filter does not make a standard ZT 350-GK stronger, and pretending otherwise would misdescribe what is actually useful about it.

Care and cleaning

Use compressed air on the clean face, directed outwards through the weave. Greasy build-up needs lukewarm water and a mild detergent instead, then a rinse until the water comes off clear. Whatever the method, the element dries in moving air only — heat guns, radiators and flames all destroy polyester — and the SM277S returns to the housing dry and untreated.
