A 310 cm³ single does not ask a great deal of its air filter. The standard woven panel is rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec, and an engine this size will not come close to drawing that through the box, whatever is fitted. Which means the case for PM189S on a G 310 GS has nothing to do with flow and everything to do with what happens between services — how steady the restriction stays, and how many times the same panel can be cleaned and put back.

Restriction that does not climb

A paper element is at its best on the day it is fitted and worse every kilometre after, because the load that makes it filter also makes it block. The curve is not dramatic, but it runs in one direction until the part is replaced. A washable weave is brought back to the same starting point by a cleaning, so the intake sees roughly the same restriction in the last month of an interval as in the first. On a small adventure single ridden year-round, that consistency is the honest benefit — and it is not power. In an unmodified airbox this element leaves a standard G 310 GS exactly as strong as it was.

The one machine of the three that goes further

PM189S covers three motorcycles: the G 310 GS, the G 310 R and the TVS Apache RR310, which share this intake housing. The finer media in the range are not spread evenly across them, though. The 7-micron nonwoven is listed for the GS alone — the only one of the three built with unsealed roads in mind — while the 14-micron mat is listed for the two road machines and not for the GS. For a GS owner that means the choice above this element skips the middle step entirely, which is a good reason to be clear about whether the standard weave is enough. For most riding, it is.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air on the clean face of the PM189S, worked outwards, is the routine service. When the weave stays grey after that, lukewarm water with a mild detergent takes the rest; rinse until the runoff is clear. Dry it in moving air at room temperature and by no other means — heat guns, radiators and flames damage the medium before the damage shows. It is refitted dry, with nothing applied.
