Where a Shallow Bend Earns Its Place

On a small single or twin the exhaust has to leave the head, clear the frame and arrive at a silencer mount, and the geometry is rarely a right angle. Thirty degrees is the increment that gets a run leaning the right way without a sharp change of direction the gas has to fight.

Two of them in series make sixty. Three make a right angle in three easy steps rather than one hard one, and a gas column notices the difference.

Springback

Stainless does not stay where it is bent. Released from a bender it springs back by four to eight degrees, so a thirty degree finished bend has to be pulled to something closer to thirty-six.

A factory bend has already accounted for that. It arrives at thirty degrees measured, which is more than can be said for most first attempts at home.

Thirty-Two Millimetres

A common header diameter on machines between 250 and 400 cc, and a sensible link size where the standard system used something similar. It is small enough to keep gas speed up on a modest engine and large enough not to choke it.

Tangent Length

Every bend arrives with a short straight section at each end. That straight is what you clamp, cut and weld against — welding on the curve is possible and is much harder to keep square.

Plan the cuts so the straight ends survive. It is the most common thing to get wrong when a bend is trimmed to fit.

Flow Through a Shallow Bend

Every change of direction costs pressure, and the cost rises steeply with angle. A thirty degree bend at a generous radius is close to free; a ninety at the same radius is not. Where a run can be built from shallow bends rather than sharp ones, it should be — the parts cost the same and the engine notices the difference at part throttle.
