DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 01092-69 is a shock absorber spring rated at 170 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.
Key Features
- 72 mm of usable stroke
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Free length 170 mm
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Measured spring rate 170 N/mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Öhlins part number 01092-69
Manufacture and Tolerance
Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.
Dimensions
The 57 mm bore and 170 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 170 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Choosing 170 N/mm
This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.
Applications
Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits.
What Fitting Involves
Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do.
Road Approval
Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
