DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60281-13 is a shock absorber spring rated at 170 N/mm, 100 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • 43 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 170 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 60281-13
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Free length 100 mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

Size and Rate

Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 100 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 170 N/mm.

Choosing 170 N/mm

Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

How a Rear Spring Works

Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise.

Applications

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.

Fitting

Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
