DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01092-41 is a shock absorber spring rated at 115 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Free length 170 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • 81 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 01092-41
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Measured spring rate 115 N/mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 170 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 115 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Where This Rate Belongs

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?

Fitting

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
