DescriptionThe whole story▼

Clean white with a scattering of black speckles and a touch of gold: the Leatt Moto 8.5 Helmet Kit White is the V25 decor of Leatt's composite motocross helmet, and one of the brightest in the range. The kit includes a Velocity 5.5 Iriz goggle, a visor extension and a helmet bag. The helmet is approved to ECE 22.06 and DOT and uses Leatt's 360° Turbine Technology. Available here in S, M, L and XL.

The weight, size by size

Many shops quote one weight for a helmet and leave it there. Leatt's type-approval file gives a figure for every shell, which is more useful, because a helmet in XL is not as light as the brochure number for the smallest size. Here are the four sizes of this decor with their shells and weights, taken without goggle or visor extension and with a tolerance of 50 g:

Size Head circumference Outer shell Weight without accessories (± 50 g)
S 55–56 cm small (XS–S) 1,250 g
M 57–58 cm medium (M–L) 1,305 g
L 59–60 cm medium (M–L) 1,340 g
XL 61–62 cm large (XL–XXL) 1,430 g

So a rider in M carries about 1,305 g, one in XL about 1,430 g. The goggle comes on top. An independent tester weighed an L from the previous generation at 1,375 g, inside Leatt's tolerance.

Why every gram counts on a motocross helmet

Off-road riding loads the neck in a way road riding rarely does. Each landing, each braking bump and each sudden stop in a rut accelerates the head, and the neck muscles have to absorb that movement. The heavier the helmet, the more force per impact. Over a race day that difference builds into fatigue, and fatigue is where mistakes happen. The 8.5 is not the lightest Leatt; the carbon 9.5 is around 55 g lighter in M. But with a fibre composite shell and three shell sizes it keeps the mass close to the head.

About the White finish

The V25 White is mostly gloss white, with light grey shading in the vents and on the lower shell. Small black speckles, like flecks of paint, are scattered across the back and the peak. A gold Leatt logo sits on the chin bar side, and the rear carries a soft grey Leatt logo below the "8.5" mark. The goggle in the product photos has a white frame with a gold-tinted lens, though Leatt does not publish the lens specification. White is a popular summer choice because it reflects more sunlight than a dark shell. It is also the colour on which mud and roost marks stand out most, so a rinse with lukewarm water and a soft sponge after each ride is part of owning it. Avoid scouring pads and solvents; the gloss surface stays good-looking for longer that way.

Who picks the White? Riders who want a clean, classic look that matches any bike, and those who ride in summer heat a lot. The gold accents keep it from looking plain, and the speckle pattern hides the first small stone chips better than a solid white would. If you prefer a helmet you do not have to wash after every outing, a darker decor is the more forgiving choice.

Air through the shell

Leatt describes the 8.5's internal ventilation channels as large, with the aim of moving air even at low speed, which is when an off-road helmet gets hottest. Intakes at the front feed channels in the EPS, and exhausts at the rear let warm air out. Leatt does not state the number of openings, so neither do we. The Loam Wolf found the ventilation of the earlier generation balanced across cool and mild temperatures.

Protection: turbines and four-density foam

Leatt's 360° Turbine Technology places flexible discs between the head and the EPS liner. They are built to deform and rotate in an impact, reducing rotational acceleration and the energy of low-speed impacts. Leatt's own testing claims up to 40 % less rotational acceleration and up to 30 % lower peak brain acceleration in concussion-range impacts. For harder hits the EPS liner works in four densities. Leatt calls this its 3-in-1 Safety System.

ECE 22.06 in brief

Since 2024, new helmets sold in the EU must be approved to ECE 22.06. The test is much tougher than the old 22.05: 18 possible impact points instead of five, impacts at more than one speed, and an oblique impact against an abrasive anvil that measures how fast the head rotates. Mounted accessories are tested in place. The Moto 8.5 also carries DOT approval for the US.

Kit contents and the goggle

For this V25 decor Leatt lists the Velocity 5.5 Iriz as the included goggle. A visor extension adds cover against mud, rain and low-angle sun, and a helmet bag protects the white paint in transport. With goggle and helmet matched, the strap sits correctly beneath the peak and the frame fills the eye port.

Inside the helmet

The Pro-Fit padset adapts to the head, and the X-Static liner wicks moisture, reduces odour and comes out for washing. In an emergency, first responders can remove the cheek pads before taking off the helmet. The chin strap uses an aluminium Double-D ring. A hydration port and the shape of the lower shell, designed to work with Leatt neck braces, round off the package.

What this helmet is not

The Moto 8.5 is not FIM-homologated. It has no visor and no sun visor. We hold no noise measurement and do not invent one; open motocross helmets are louder at speed than closed road helmets. Testers noted a short chin bar and peak.

Shells, sizes and fit

Three outer shells cover the Moto 8.5's six sizes, two sizes each. In this White decor, S uses the small shell, M and L the middle one and XL the large one; XS and XXL exist in other colourways. Because no shell spans more than two sizes, the helmet stays compact for its size class. A reviewer of the earlier generation found the fit close, almost like a beanie.

After a crash

Leatt offers a three-year Helmet Replacement Program for crash damage, on terms Leatt defines. Whether separate parts in this decor can be ordered is not stated in the documents we hold, so we would rather check with Leatt for you than promise it.
