A complete range, not a recommendation

A manufacturer that makes four media will offer four media wherever the tooling allows, and a single-machine code like SM249 shows that clearly: the ladder is complete for a bike that is not a platform and has no racing class of its own. So the top of the list is not advice. In an unmodified airbox this element leaves a standard Caballero exactly as strong as it was, and the flow figure describes what the medium can pass, not what a 500 cm³ single is going to draw through it.

One airbox, no compromises to split

There is a quieter advantage in a code that serves a single machine. A shared part number has to seal two or three housings from two or three manufacturers, and its frame is drawn to satisfy all of them; this one answers to the Caballero alone. Beyond that, the case for the medium rests on its measured retention — 95.22 % of 100-micron particles, where the standard weave for this box returns 93.13 % on the same test. That difference, and the identical dry, washable construction, is the whole of what the higher price buys. It is a small, honest number, and a better basis for the decision than the flow figure above it.

Care and cleaning

Service the SM249S F1-85 with compressed air, directed at the clean face and swept outwards, so whatever the weave has collected leaves along the path it entered by. Water — lukewarm, with a mild detergent — is the second stage and only when air has stopped working, followed by rinsing until nothing clouds the runoff. Then leave the panel in moving air at room temperature until it is genuinely dry; heat sources of every kind are excluded, since they spoil a woven medium without leaving a mark.
