Housing and Switch Together
Ducati builds the right-hand controls into the throttle assembly. Renewing either means renewing both, which this component does in machined aluminium.
Data Acquisition Built In
The S carried Ducati's DDA system, logging channels to a memory key for later analysis. On a road bike in 2012 that was a genuinely unusual thing to find as standard.
Electronic Öhlins
Suspension settings changed from the dashboard rather than with a screwdriver. Ducati was early to this and the implementation worked better than it had any right to.
Sealed Elements
The contacts sit within the machined body. Ingress rather than mechanical wear is what ends switchgear, and a moulded seam is the way in.
A Cut Bore
The throttle tube turns in a machined bore, which keeps the rotation smooth and the sensor reading faithful. Ten years on, that is the difference between a tight grip and a vague one.
One Finish
Black anodised, converted into the surface. On a motorcycle whose bodywork does all the visual work, a quiet cockpit is the right answer.
Ergal 7075
Aerospace grade at roughly twice the strength of the alloys used in most machined accessories. Harder to cut and considerably better where it clamps.
Forged Marchesini Wheels
The S's rims removed rotating mass at the point where it does most good. On a motorcycle already at 164 kilograms dry, the steering became lighter still.
Ducati's Plug
Pre-wired to the original connector, so nothing is spliced. Two fasteners, one plug, and nothing needs configuring afterwards.
Desmodromic Valves
Ducati closes its valves mechanically rather than with springs, which is what allows the Superquadro's enormous valves to follow a camshaft at twelve thousand revs. No other manufacturer has considered the complexity worthwhile for fifty years and Ducati has never seriously considered giving it up.
