Belt Drive and Forward Controls
Ducati built an actual cruiser, with a toothed belt to the rear wheel and the pegs set forward. It was aimed at a market that had never bought a Ducati and it sold reasonably well.
A Hundred and Fifty-Two Horsepower
The 1262 cc Testastretta DVT retuned for low-rev torque, which on a cruiser is the only figure anyone cares about. It still revs further than anything else in the category.
Adjustable Ergonomics
Ducati offered several peg positions, seats and handlebars so the same motorcycle could fit riders of very different sizes. It is a level of accommodation the company does not usually bother with.
The Housing Alone
The switch block is unaffected. This is the throttle assembly by itself, which is the right choice when the switchgear works and the plastic does not please.
An Unusual Wrist Angle
Forward controls and pulled-back bars put the hand on the grip differently from any sports bike. A housing that keeps its bore tight makes that position more predictable over a long day.
Black Anodised
One finish, converted into the aluminium. The X Diavel carries a great deal of machined and blacked metal already and this sits with it rather than against it.
Cut From Solid
Ergal 7075, roughly double the yield strength of ordinary machined alloy. On a heavy motorcycle that will eventually be dropped, the material choice is a practical one.
A Cruiser Ducati Meant
Most manufacturers approach this category half-heartedly. Ducati built a proper one, kept the engine and the brakes it would have used anywhere else, and produced something genuinely unlike the American alternatives.
