The One Riders Still Look For
Lighter than the 1290, more powerful than the 790, with WP suspension and a 21 inch front. KTM discontinued it without a replacement and a substantial number of experienced adventure riders consider that a mistake the company has never corrected.
Why It Works Off Road
The 1090 R weighs enough less than the 1290 that picking it up after a fall is a realistic proposition rather than an ordeal. On terrain where that happens several times a day, the difference between the two bikes is not marginal.
The ABS Switch
Disabling the rear ABS is what allows the back wheel to be used for steering on a loose surface. It is operated in gloves, frequently while moving, and a control that requires a second press at the wrong moment is genuinely unhelpful.
Standing for Hours
The riding position assumes the pegs over rough ground, which brings the hands to the bar from above. Machined relief between the controls works from that angle where printed symbols the rider cannot see do not.
Grit Before Water
Fine dust works into a contact and remains there, which makes it more destructive than rain. Sealed elements inside a housing with no moulded joint give it nowhere to enter across a long dusty route.
Repeated Low-Speed Falls
Nobody rides an Adventure R properly without putting it on its side. The bar end lands first, every time, and Ergal scuffs where injection-moulded plastic cracks and stops holding the switch in place.
Black Anodised
A single finish, through the surface rather than applied over it. It dulls with contact rather than chipping, which on a bike used this way is what actually matters.
