The Cancel Switch
Worked dozens of times an hour on a motorcycle used for actual travelling. It is the single most operated control on the bike and the first place wear becomes obvious.
Legends That Disappear
Printed markings on a moulded shell fade under ultraviolet within a handful of summers. A machined body carries none at all, so nothing is lost.
Thermal Cycling
The cockpit area warms considerably and then cools completely, several hundred times a year. Plastics take a set under that and aluminium does not.
Snap Fittings Over Years
Two moulded halves clipped together, under the vibration of a 937 cc twin. They gradually stop holding each other tightly and the movement never resolves itself.
Microns of Anodising
Colour grown into the aluminium rather than laid on it. On a bike ridden through salted winters, that is the difference visible at the first spring wash.
Twenty Minutes to Undo
The loom is not cut anywhere. On a two-year model that has become quietly sought after, keeping everything original is worth the small effort.
Two Model Years
Ducati built this version briefly and then abandoned the model. Nothing in the current range does what it did, which is why survivors change hands quickly and quietly.
Cornering ABS as Standard
The 939 generation gained a Bosch inertial platform with lean-sensitive braking, which on a touring bike meeting unfamiliar roads is worth considerably more than on a circuit.
Sixteen Litres
A far larger tank than the Hypermotard's. On a motorcycle built for journeys that is the difference between stopping every hour and stopping twice in a day.
