A Naked Bike on a Circuit
Tuonos turn up at track days in numbers that surprise people, because 175 hp and a superbike frame do not stop being useful when the fairing comes off. The control layout follows the use rather than the bodywork.
The Reordered Column
The blue button moves to the bottom of the row. It is a small change and it becomes obvious within one session, because the thumb stops hunting and starts arriving.
Seventy-Seven Extra Cubic Centimetres
Aprilia enlarged the Tuono's engine to 1077 cc in 2015 for torque rather than peak power. On a circuit that means drive from a second-gear corner without waiting for the revs to arrive.
Before the Update
The pre-2017 control layout takes this part number. Aprilia changed the left-hand assembly with the model update, and the later machines need the RF version instead.
Wind Where There Is No Fairing
At the speeds this engine reaches, the rider's hands are pushed back against the bar and any control operation is made against pressure. A block that stays firm in its mounting is the difference between deliberate and approximate.
Four Finishes
Black, blue, red and titanium, anodised through the aluminium. On a naked bike the cockpit is visible from outside as well as from the saddle, which makes the choice slightly less private.
Milled and Sealed
One billet of Ergal with military-specification contacts enclosed. There is no moulded seam anywhere, which on a motorcycle that offers its switchgear no shelter at all is the whole argument.
Original Connector
Pre-wired to Aprilia's plug. Two screws and one connector, with nothing to configure and nothing appearing on the dash afterwards.
