A Thruxton Engine in a Roadster
Ninety-seven horsepower from the high-power 1200 twin, in a chassis without clip-ons. It is the most usable of the modern Bonneville family.

Wet, which is light for the family and part of why the Speed Twin handles considerably better than its appearance suggests.
What the Controller Measures
Coil resistance, at every ignition cycle. It has no way of distinguishing a deliberately removed valve from a broken wire and no reason to try.
On the Overrun Only
The valve is shut at any meaningful throttle opening. It works entirely on a closed throttle, which is precisely when nobody is asking anything of the engine.
Soot in the Airbox
A cracked reed lets exhaust gas travel back up the hose, and the residue coats the filter. It is usually discovered while looking for something else entirely.
A Decision Worth Recording
Whoever works on this motorcycle in five years will assume the emissions system is intact. A line in the service book is worth an hour of somebody's confusion later.
Sold Because the Fault Is Common
Aftermarket parts exist where manufacturers leave a gap, and a monitored emissions component with no service provision is exactly such a gap.
The Warning Is Not Cosmetic
Some riders live with the lamp, which works until an unrelated fault appears and cannot be distinguished from the one that has been there for two years. A clean dashboard has diagnostic value.
