The Last of the Line
The GT replaced the ST with revised bodywork and a little more power, and it was the final development of BMW's belt-driven 800. Nothing since has done quite the same job.
What Leaves the Motorcycle
Roughly a kilogram and a half of vessel, bracket and plumbing, none of which contributes to how the engine runs.
Space Rather Than Weight
A kilogram and a half is not a transformation. The area it frees behind the engine is worth considerably more, particularly to anyone fitting luggage mounts or an aftermarket silencer.
Cold Weather
Vapour lines running from a warm tank to a cold canister collect condensation, and in a hard winter that water can freeze in the smallest bend. It is a known nuisance rather than a rare one.
Dust and Water
An open breather sitting behind the engine collects both. The supplied fitting is shaped to keep them out, which an amputated hose cannot do.
The Electrical Half
Removing the vessel is mechanical; keeping the controller happy is not. The kit covers both because either alone leaves a job unfinished.
Ninety Horsepower and a Belt
The GT was never fast and it was remarkably easy to live with. Owners cover enormous distances on them precisely because so little needs attention.
Look Before Ordering
BMW fitted the system only in markets that required it. A bike imported second hand may have none of this plumbing at all.
No Consumables
Nothing in the removal destroys a seal, a clip or a hose. The same components go back on.
Not a Grey Area
Either the market requires the system or it does not. Where it does, removing it is unambiguous and the rider should know that going in.
