DescriptionThe whole story▼
EC and ECE approved, plug and play, and no remapping. For a complete exhaust system — headers included — that set of properties is unusual, and it makes this one of the few Racing Lines here an owner can fit to a road bike and simply ride.
Key Features
- EC and ECE type approved, valid only with the catalytic converter installed
- Plug and play installation, no remapping needed
- Titanium muffler with stainless steel headers
- Handmade carbon fibre end cap
- Cut to 5.51 kg from a standard 8.4 — over a third gone
- Climbs to 64.5 PS from 62.1, taken at 8,550 rpm
- Increased performance across the whole rev range
Torque at Three Thousand Four Hundred
2.6 Nm more at 3,400 rpm. On Kawasaki's 649 cc parallel twin that is barely off idle, and it is where a Ninja 650 or Z650 spends its time in town and on back roads.
Akrapovic states the system increases performance across the rev range, and the two published points — torque low down and power at 8,550 — support that rather than describing a single peak.
Steel Headers, Titanium Muffler
The materials are split by task: stainless steel where the headers take heat and the occasional impact, titanium for the muffler where the weight saving is available. The carbon end cap is handmade.
That combination is what keeps a road-legal complete system at this price. An all-titanium version would cost considerably more for a motorcycle in this class.
The Catalytic Converter Condition
Akrapovic states the EC type approval is valid only when the catalytic converter is installed. The system arrives with one fitted, and it must stay there for the approval to hold.
That is the whole condition, and it is an easy one to meet — nothing needs doing beyond leaving the exhaust as delivered.
An Hour
Sixty minutes for a complete system is short. A parallel twin has two header pipes rather than four, and Kawasaki leaves them accessible from below. This is a realistic job for a competent home mechanic with a paddock stand.
Four Model Years
Kawasaki built this generation of Ninja 650 and Z650 from 2017 to 2020 before the 2021 update changed the bodywork and the electronics. The exhaust route belongs to those four years only.
Handmade Carbon at the Outlet
Akrapovic specifies the end cap as handmade rather than moulded in volume. On a part this visible — the outlet is what anyone behind the motorcycle sees — the difference between a laid weave and a wrapped one shows at arm's length.
A Third of the Weight
2.89 kg saved from a 193 kg motorcycle is one and a half per cent, and it comes out of the collector under the engine plus the silencer behind the rider. Both are places where mass is unhelpful.
Road Approval
EC and ECE type approval, valid only with the catalytic converter installed. No entry in the vehicle documents is required.
