DescriptionThe whole story▼

The French Grand Prix is Johann Zarco's home round, and this Skwal Cup carries the livery he wore for it: a blue base cut through with chrome-effect graphics and red accent lines, built around the tricolour without spelling it out literally. It's a road helmet with a racer's occasion behind it, not a track-only piece — everything under the shell is the same Skwal Cup engineering sold across the rest of the range, from the spoiler down to the certification.

A spoiler borrowed from the track

The feature that sets the Skwal Cup apart from most helmets near its price sits at the back of the shell: a raised spoiler, worked out through computational fluid-dynamics simulation and then checked in a wind tunnel, the same process Shark runs on its competition lids. At speed it manages the air coming off the back of the helmet rather than letting it separate and buffet, which is what keeps a helmet calm on a fast dual-carriageway or a naked bike where the rider's head sits fully in the airstream. The shell was built for stability first; the graphics sit on top of that decision.

What ECE 22.06 actually checks

Every Skwal Cup carries ECE 22.06, mandatory for newly homologated helmets sold in the EU since January 2024, replacing the older 22.05 standard. The step up is bigger than the version number suggests: 22.05 struck a helmet at five points, 22.06 strikes eighteen, at a range of impact speeds rather than one, and adds an oblique-impact test against an abrasive anvil that loads the shell with twisting, glancing forces rather than a straight drop. It also scores a Brain Injury Criterion for rotational energy, not just linear deceleration, and tests the helmet with a visor, Pinlock insert and comms unit fitted — because that's how people actually ride. The certificate reads 2206 with no FIM suffix: road approval, not competition homologation.

Shell and closure

The shell is injection-moulded polycarbonate, built in two shell sizes so smaller heads aren't riding around in an oversized moulding. Inside, a multi-density EPS liner grades its firmness across the shell rather than using one uniform foam, and the whole thing closes with a double-D ring, a fastening that can't work itself loose the way a quick-release buckle can under load.

Weight, and what it means over a day's riding

Shark quotes 1,580 g (+/-50 g) for the Skwal Cup, a figure given for the first, smallest shell size rather than a mid-range M — riders in the smaller shell sit close to that number, while L-to-XXL, on the larger shell for the same design, will typically run a little above it. That matters because a helmet's weight is carried by the neck for the whole time it's on, and the difference between a light and a heavy lid compounds hour after hour rather than showing up in the first five minutes. Within our own catalogue of road-legal full-face helmets, most weights land between roughly 1,250 g and 1,800 g, and the Skwal Cup's figure sits comfortably in the middle of that spread.

Visor and Pinlock

The visor is Optical class 1 and ships with a Pinlock 70 insert already fitted, dealing with fogging in cold or wet weather from the first ride. It releases without tools for cleaning or swapping. It isn't on Shark's IRID photochromic compatibility list, which covers the AERON GP, AERON and RACE R PRO — light-reactive tinting here means an aftermarket visor, not a factory option.

Sun visor and everyday usability

An internal sun visor drops from a slider on the crown, useful for the moment low sun hits on a ride home. The shell takes a SENA-style intercom unit without modification, the outer visor releases quickly for cleaning, and the cheek pads leave room for glasses arms.

The Zarco GP de France 2026 finish, in use

This decor is a gloss finish, which cleans up with a wipe and keeps its shine after a wash, at the cost of showing fine scuffs more readily than a matte shell would — a trade most riders make gladly for a livery built around a home Grand Prix. Worn on the road, the design reads as motorsport without shouting: the chrome-effect graphic catches light differently depending on the angle, and the blue and red keep it identifiably tied to Zarco's colours rather than becoming an abstract pattern.

Fit across the size run

Six sizes, XS through XXL, are built across the two shell sizes described above, keeping proportions sensible at both ends of the range rather than putting a small head in an oversized shell or a large head in a compressed one.

Where the Skwal Cup sits on price

Inside Shark's current road range, the Ridill 2 opens the ladder, the D-Skwal 3 follows, and this decor sits above both. A step up, the Skwal i3 varies in price by decor, and the Skwal i Cup sits alongside it — both of those add the LED brake-light system covered below, which is most of what separates their starting prices from the Skwal Cup's.

Spare parts, later

Shark keeps a dedicated spare-visor listing that covers the Skwal Cup alongside the Ridill 2, D-Skwal 3 and Skwal i3, so a scratched or fogged visor is a replacement part rather than a reason to buy a new helmet.

What this helmet does not have

Said plainly, so nothing is discovered after delivery: this decor has no LED brake light — the Skwal i3 and Skwal i Cup in Shark's own range do, and a rider who wants that feature should look there instead. No SHARP star rating exists for the Skwal Cup; the UK programme has tested the original Skwal, the Skwal 2 and the D-Skwal, but not this model. Homologation is ECE 22.06 only, with no FIM suffix. There is no MIPS liner and no electronic quick-release system fitted, and the visor has no tear-off posts.

In the box

The helmet itself, the Pinlock 70 insert fitted to the visor, and Shark's documentation covering the five-year warranty.
