There is a reflex that says the biggest engine must want the most air, and by swept volume the Gold Wing's flat six is the biggest engine in this catalogue by a wide margin. The reflex is only half a sum. Air demand is swept volume multiplied by how often the engine sweeps it, and this is an engine geared, tuned and intended to turn slowly. A 600 supersport wound out near its limit can ask for more air per second than the six can, despite giving away most of the litres. Displacement decides how much air per revolution; revolutions decide the rest.

Litres are not litres per second

That distinction decides who a high-flow cloth is for. The number on the datasheet is a ceiling, and a ceiling is only worth raising for an engine that is up near it. An engine that spends its life a long way below the ceiling gains the same amount from raising it as a room gains from a taller roof: nothing you can stand on. It is not that the six is a poor engine — it is a superb one — but its excellence is torque delivered calmly, which is exactly the operating regime in which intake flow is not the constraint.

The step, and what is actually in it

Priced against the standard element for this airbox, the racing line comes to a little over two and a quarter times as much, and the difference it delivers is a single specification: the cloth. Everything else about the two — the dry construction, the fit, the cleaning routine, the intended service life — is the same. That is worth saying plainly, because nothing here makes a standard Gold Wing stronger. What the F1-85 offers is headroom, and headroom is only valuable to a motorcycle that reaches for it.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air from the clean face outward covers routine servicing. Where a long season has left a film that air will not lift, wash the SM284S F1-85 in lukewarm water with a little mild detergent and rinse it until the water runs clear. Drying must happen in open air and at its own speed — polyester will not tolerate a heat gun, a radiator or a flame — and the element is refitted dry and with nothing applied.
