The Speed Twin 900 is the newest motorcycle on this part number, which means most of them have no service history worth the name yet. Whatever goes into the airbox in the first years is what the intake tract will have breathed through by the time somebody buys the bike second-hand, and a cellulose element leaves no trace of how conscientious its owner was — it simply gets replaced, or it does not. The Sprint Filter PM217S is a dry woven polyester element that stays with the machine: it is washed and refitted rather than thrown away, and Sprint Filter design it to last the life of the motorcycle.

The habit you set now is the one the bike keeps

A paper element is a decision that has to be taken again every service, and on a young motorcycle it is the easiest line in the schedule to defer — nothing sounds different, nothing lights up on the dash, and the bike is still under warranty anyway. A washable element removes the decision. Over the first five years that is the difference between an intake tract with a known history and one with none.

What it actually changes

Not power. A drop-in filter does not make a standard engine noticeably stronger, and this text will not pretend otherwise. What the PM217S offers is a low intake restriction that stays low: it does not climb between services the way a loading paper element does, and it is returned to its starting point every time it is cleaned. On a mid-capacity twin ridden mostly on part throttle, stability in that figure is worth more than any peak on a dyno sheet.

Care and cleaning

Servicing this element is a bench job of ten minutes: compressed air on the clean side, blown outwards, and it is ready to go back. A season that ended dirty earns more — a wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear.
