DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01093-34 is a shock absorber spring rated at 100 N/mm, 150 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Free length 150 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 71 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Öhlins part number 01093-34
  • Measured spring rate 100 N/mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.

The Numbers That Matter

The 57 mm bore and 150 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 100 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Where This Rate Belongs

Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.

Applications

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.

What Fitting Involves

The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
