DescriptionThe whole story▼

Eddie O'Shea is a British racer who spent years riding for Shark in UK championships before being called up by Michael Laverty's MLav Racing team to stand in for Joshua Whatley in Moto3 in 2024, taking a best finish of 16th at the Malaysian round across his four races. This gloss decor in white, red and blue carries his colours onto a road-legal Skwal Cup.

What the spoiler is actually for

The raised section at the back of the Skwal Cup's shell isn't there to make the helmet look sportier, even if that's the first impression. It's shaped to control the separation of airflow at the rear of the shell, worked out through computational fluid-dynamics modelling and then verified in a wind tunnel — the same testing Shark applies to its track helmets, where a helmet nudging off-line at speed is a genuine handling problem rather than a mild annoyance.

The abrasive-anvil test

Among the additions in ECE 22.06 — the standard behind this helmet's certification, mandatory in the EU since January 2024 — the oblique-impact test against an abrasive anvil is the one that best explains why the new standard is harder to pass: it drags the shell across a rough surface at an angle, reproducing the glancing, twisting load of an actual fall rather than the clean vertical drop older tests used. That sits alongside a jump from five impact points to eighteen, several impact speeds instead of one, a new rotational Brain Injury Criterion, and testing with the visor, Pinlock and comms unit fitted. This model's paperwork carries 2206, with no FIM suffix.

The build under the graphics

Injection-moulded polycarbonate shell, two shell sizes across the range, multi-density EPS inside varying firmness by zone, and a double-D ring closure — the fastening still preferred wherever a rider wants a strap that can't loosen itself mid-crash.

Not the lightest, not the heaviest

The Skwal Cup isn't marketed as an ultra-light helmet, and its 1,580 g (+/-50 g) figure — quoted for the smallest, first shell size — reflects that honestly: it sits in the middle of the roughly 1,250 g to 1,800 g range most of our road-legal full-face helmets occupy, not at the featherweight end. Riders on L to XXL, built on the Skwal Cup's larger shell, should expect a touch more than that quoted figure for the same design, since the number is measured on the lighter shell by convention rather than an average across sizes.

The O'Shea finish, in use

White as the base colour shows road grime faster than black or a dark blue would, but the gloss finish also wipes it off with the least effort of any finish in this range — a straightforward trade for riders who don't mind an extra pass with a cloth after a wet commute. Red and blue break up the white cleanly rather than as an afterthought, keeping the helmet legible from a distance as well as up close.

Everyday usability

Sun visor slider on the crown, SENA-ready shell, tool-free outer visor release, and cheek pads that leave room for glasses arms — none of it flashy, all of it useful on a normal ride.

Being straight about noise

Manufacturers don't always publish a tested decibel figure, and this is one of those cases — no rating exists, so none is quoted. What is confirmed is the construction: a seal around the visor aperture and a chin curtain at the base of the shell, closing the gaps that generate noise at speed.

Skwal Cup against its own siblings

Shark builds four road-focused lines close together on price: the Ridill 2, the D-Skwal 3, the Skwal Cup, the Skwal i3 and the Skwal i Cup. What separates the top two from the Skwal Cup isn't the shell or the aerodynamics — it's an LED brake-light system this helmet doesn't have.

Confirmed, not assumed

It would be easy to assume a helmet this specific has no aftermarket support — it isn't the case: Shark's spare-parts collection for visors names the Skwal Cup directly, alongside the Ridill 2, D-Skwal 3 and Skwal i3.

What sets the Skwal Cup apart from its own family

Within Shark's own Skwal family, this is the member without an LED brake light — that's the Skwal i3 and Skwal i Cup's feature, not this helmet's. It's also the member SHARP has never tested: the programme's star ratings cover the Skwal, Skwal 2 and D-Skwal, not the Cup. Homologation stops at ECE 22.06, no FIM suffix, and there's no MIPS liner, no electronic quick-release system, no tear-off posts.

In the box

The helmet, the Pinlock 70 insert already fitted, and five years of manufacturer warranty cover on paper.

From club racing to a Moto3 call-up

O'Shea's route to that Moto3 call-up ran through years of UK-based racing under Shark's sponsorship before Michael Laverty's MLav Racing team brought him in mid-season to replace an injured teammate — the kind of short-notice opportunity that doesn't come with a full pre-season to prepare, which makes the 16th-place finish in Malaysia a genuine result rather than a formality. This decor's white, red and blue carry that story onto a helmet built for the road rather than the grid.

What "replica" means on this decor

This isn't a helmet O'Shea wore in competition, sold on afterward — it's a production Skwal Cup finished in his colours, built to the same shell, certification and spec as every other decor in the range. The connection is the livery, not the individual unit.

That's true of every replica decor in this range, not just this one — worth understanding before assuming a replica helmet is somehow the exact item worn on track. What buyers are actually getting is the colour scheme and the story behind it, on a helmet built to the same standard as every other Skwal Cup on the shelf. Nothing about the certification, weight or spoiler changes because of the graphic on top.
