DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 04799-10 is a pair of fork springs rated at 10 N/mm, 260 mm long with a 25.5 mm inner diameter. Too stiff and the front loses feel over bumps; too soft and it dives under the brakes. Rate sets that balance.

Key Features

  • Free length 260 mm
  • Measured spring rate 10 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 25.5 mm
  • Supplied as a pair
  • Öhlins part number 04799-10

Manufacture and Tolerance

Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.

Size and Rate

Free length 260 mm, inner diameter 25.5 mm, rate 10 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.

Installation

If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
