DescriptionThe whole story▼

A BMW R 1250 GS is a heavy motorcycle, and a rutted, broken track makes that very clear. The boxer engine keeps the centre of gravity low, which helps, yet the bike still reacts badly to a rider who clings to the handlebar. The trick is to let the feet carry the load and keep the arms loose, so the motorcycle can move and find its own way. Accossato makes enlarged footpegs in Ergal for the R 1250 GS of 2019 to 2022, in green or black.

Construction and Material Quality

Accossato lists these as enlarged off-road footpegs, made of Ergal and intended for motocross, enduro and off-road riding. Ergal is a high-strength aluminium alloy. The larger platform is what the name describes, and it matters on a heavy machine, where the rider's weight on the pegs is the main means of steering and balancing it away from tarmac. You get a matching pair, one for each side, in green or black. Accossato, founded in 1969 in Moncalieri near Turin, gives no further data for the set.

Loose Hands on a Heavy Bike

The mistake almost everyone makes on a big GS off-road is holding the handlebar too tightly. Every bump then travels through stiff arms into the steering, the front wheel is pushed off line, and the rider tenses up even more. The cure is to hold the R 1250 GS with the legs instead: knees against the tank, boots flat on the pegs and the hands resting on the grips just firmly enough to work the throttle, clutch and brake. With the feet carrying the load, the handlebar is free to move, and the front wheel follows the ground instead of fighting it.

The cylinders of the boxer sit ahead of the rider's shins, so the standing position feels different from that of a single-cylinder enduro, and it takes a few rides to settle into it. Trainers who work with these bikes often tell riders to picture the motorcycle pivoting beneath them around the footpegs. A broader peg makes that pivot more solid under the boot, and on a machine of this size any extra stability at the feet is welcome.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the set for the R 1250 GS from 2019 to 2022, and we have linked it to those years; in our garage it is also assigned to the R 1250 GS Rallye entry. It is the only Accossato footpeg for this bike, and the same pair is listed for the F 800 GS and the F 850 GS as well. When swapping the pegs, keep the original pins and springs if they are in good condition, clean and lightly grease the pivot, and then check that both pegs fold and return freely. Look everything over again after the first outing.

Road Approval

We have received no ABE or test certificate for these pegs, which is why we list them for competition and racing.
