DescriptionThe whole story

Matt black is the most-bought finish on any urban helmet and the one that asks the least of you. Nothing about it competes with the motorcycle, and nothing about it dates.

What an open-face helmet does and does not do

🔵 The honest paragraph, up front. This helmet protects the skull; it does not protect the face. That is not a shortcoming of the Y.10 in particular — it is what the open-face category is, and no certification changes what is physically absent.

What you get in exchange is a helmet you will actually put on for a ten-minute journey.

About the matt black finish

A jet helmet is handled far more than a full-face — on and off at every stop, carried by the edge, set down on café tables and pillion seats several times a day rather than once. That handling is exactly what a flat finish absorbs best: there is no gloss layer for a scuff to catch in, so the marks a city helmet accumulates simply do not read. 🔵 The counterweight is honest and worth stating: this is the least conspicuous helmet in the range, on a helmet type used almost entirely in the environment where being seen matters most. Matt also holds dust and dried water spots more visibly than gloss, and it is washed rather than polished.

Polyfusion, two shells and three approvals

🔵 Three approvals rather than four. The Y.10 holds ECE 22-06, DOT FMVSS 218 and NBR7471:2015 — but not the Chinese CCC certification that Nexx's X-range carries. Irrelevant in Europe; worth knowing if you are shipping the helmet.

The shell is Polyfusion thermoplastic in two outer sizes.

The sun visor, the peak — and the clear visor that is not there

🔵 Read the box contents carefully before buying: helmet and peak. There is no clear visor. The only screen on this helmet is the lightly tinted drop-down sun shield, and it is a daylight item.

For a city helmet used in daylight that is entirely workable. For wet or dark riding, plan on glasses or goggles.

Airflow on an open-face

🔵 A caveat worth stating: the two-stage top vent Nexx describes is fitted to some Y.10 versions rather than all of them. We are not going to claim it for every finish in the range, because the manufacturer does not.

What is common to all of them is the face opening, which on any jet moves more air than any vent design could.

Interior, glasses and the buckle

🔵 If you wear glasses, this is one of the easiest helmets in the range to live with. There is no chin bar to thread the arms past, and the liner is cut slim specifically so the arms are not pressed against your temples.

Everything comes out for washing, and the buckle is a micrometric ratchet rather than a two-position clip.

Intercom — and the 45 mm limit

🔵 The 45 mm speaker limit is the specification to check before buying an intercom for this helmet. Most universal audio sets fall within it, but larger high-output speakers do not — and a speaker that does not sit in the recess presses on your ear instead.

The provision is universal rather than tied to Nexx's own X-COM range.

1325 grams, and the rest of the honest list

🔵 The best argument for a light helmet is not comfort on a long ride, it is the short one. At 1325 g with no chin bar, the Y.10 is the helmet you reach for rather than deciding to take the car.

What you accept: wind noise above city speeds, no chin protection, and a tinted-only screen.

Choosing the right size

🔵 Two outer shell sizes means the boundary matters: XXS to L share one shell, XL and XXL the other. Sizes at the top of each shell carry thinner padding than sizes at the bottom of it.

In practice that means an L and an XL can feel more different than the one-size gap suggests. Try both if you are near the boundary.

When something wears out

🔵 The peak is the part most likely to be damaged, because it is the part that projects. It fits and removes without tools, and a replacement is far cheaper than a helmet — worth knowing before you write one off after a drop.

The liner, padding and sun visor are all separately available too.

Where it sits in Nexx's range

Within the range this is the urban helmet and nothing else competes with it directly. The X.G30 is Nexx's premium jet on a composite shell; the Y.100R is the accessible full-face; the X-range covers sport, street and adventure.

🔵 The Y.10 is the lightest and least expensive of all of them.

“A clean, understated jet with a proper drop-down sun visor and a wide adjustable shield, at 1,225 g. It has less presence than the Shoei J.O2 but costs a third as much and is easier to live with day to day.”
