DescriptionThe whole story

Matt grey is the finish that asks the least of you over a few years of daily use, and on a retro shape it has a second advantage: grey reads as a period colour in a way modern metallics do not.

A café-racer shape on a 2026 shell

What makes this a retro helmet rather than a retro-looking one is what has been left off: no spoiler, no vent housings bolted to the outside, no aggressive shaping. The shell is a plain, unbroken curve, which is exactly what a helmet of the era it references would have been.

🔵 What has been added is invisible: ECE 22.06, DOT, a full-coverage sun visor and intercom preparation.

About the matt grey finish

Value rather than colour decides both how dirty a helmet looks and how easily it is seen, and a mid grey sits at the useful point on that scale for both at once. Road film, dust and dried rain marks all show least here — they read as haze on black and as obvious marks on white. And a driver's eye resolves a mid-value object against dark tarmac appreciably faster than a dark one, which on a helmet used mostly in traffic is the argument that matters. There is a period argument too: unpainted and primer-grey helmets are part of the visual language the Jarama borrows from, so the colour belongs to the shape rather than sitting on it. 🔵 Like every matt finish it is washed rather than polished, and it holds dry dust more visibly than gloss. Of the five finishes here it is the one that will look the same in five years, because grey belongs to no particular season. It is also the one we would recommend to a rider buying the Jarama SV as an everyday helmet rather than as a weekend one — nothing about it needs managing, and it hides the wear a daily helmet accumulates better than either the white or the black.

HIRP, 1475 grams, ECE 22.06 and DOT

Full ECE 22.06 approval means the current schedule rather than the superseded 22.05: more impact points, higher test speeds, and a rotational-impact assessment the older standard did not include. DOT approval sits alongside it and is tested differently again.

🔵 On a retro-styled helmet that combination is worth checking, because plenty of period-look helmets hold only the older revision.

Sizes — read this before ordering

A narrower size range is a consequence of the shell design rather than an oversight: a compact retro silhouette has less scope to be scaled up than a modern shell with room to work in.

🔵 The practical result is the same either way — XS to XL, five sizes, and no larger option in this model.

The full-coverage sun visor

Sunset on a westbound road is the condition that decides whether a sun visor was worth having, and it is precisely the condition a fixed tinted visor handles worst — half an hour later it is dark and you cannot see through it.

🔵 A drop-down shield retracts in a second and costs you nothing when it is up.

MT-V-32, the rubber lip and the anti-fog insert you buy separately

Fogging is decided at low speed — junctions, traffic, waiting — where there is no airflow to clear a visor. Without an anti-fog insert a cold commute will mist the visor at every stop.

🔵 Budget roughly 25–40 € for a DKS479 or a Fog012 before the first cold month; it is the first accessory this helmet needs.

How quiet it is — and what we actually know

A retro shell has one acoustic advantage and one disadvantage. The advantage is a small, smooth frontal area with nothing bolted to it; the disadvantage is no spoiler and no deep neck roll to manage the wake.

🔵 On balance MT claims low noise. No independent test has checked it.

The MT-MDHC closure

What a micrometric closure gives you over a simple buckle is fine adjustment. You are not choosing between two holes; you are setting the strap to the millimetre and clicking to the same place every time.

🔵 The double-tooth engagement is what makes that click mean something.

Interior, fit and intercom preparation

Washing the lining is the single most effective maintenance you can do. Sweat breaks down foam over time, and a lining washed a few times a season lasts appreciably longer than one that never is.

🔵 All of it comes out on this helmet, including the cheek pads.

Where it sits in MT's range

Within this model the price ladder is entirely paint. The Pure solids at 132 € and the two graphics at 144 € share the same shell, the same visor, the same sun visor and the same closure.

🔵 The cheapest Jarama SV protects exactly as well as the most expensive.

When something wears out

Helmets are consumables with a long life rather than permanent objects. MT, like every manufacturer, recommends replacement after around five years of use regardless of condition — and immediately after any real impact, because the EPS crushes once and does not recover.

Between those points, everything you touch on this helmet is replaceable.

“The retro shape is the reason to look and the price is the reason to buy. It is a full-face rather than an open helmet, which costs it ground in this category, and the ventilation is its weakest area.”
