DescriptionThe whole story▼

If you only remember one thing about the Skwal i3, make it this: integrated LED brake lights, front and rear, reacting to the helmet's own motion rather than a wire to the bike, in what Shark calls the world's first production helmet built this way. Vibetrack presents that system in a black shell with a red and white diagonal stripe graphic across the flank.

How the brake light actually works

What makes this a genuine brake light rather than a blinking accessory is the accelerometer behind it — a three-axis sensor that reads the helmet's own deceleration and responds with red LEDs at the rear, three flashes a second normally and five under hard braking. White LEDs at the front cover forward visibility on a separate, always-available circuit. Nothing here talks to the motorcycle electronically.

Sun visor and everyday usability

A crown slider, one motion, and the internal sun visor is down — useful on the ride home as the sun drops. The Skwal i3's interior is built to keep glasses arms from pressing, and the shell accepts a Sharktooth or SENA intercom without modification. Everything is covered by Shark's 5-year warranty.

Wind noise, honestly

We'd rather report nothing than a made-up number, and no decibel figure exists for the Skwal i3 in any source used here. What does exist: an independent long-term review's finding that noise wasn't unduly loud and that no single part of the shell generated localised wind noise, attributed to a substantial neck roll and a generous chin curtain.

Vibetrack, red

Red against black and white is one of the higher-contrast combinations in this range, and the gloss coat on this decor pushes that contrast further than a matte finish would. It's a black shell with a red and white diagonal stripe graphic across the flank. The diagonal stripe graphic reads clearly at a glance, on a stationary bike in a car park as much as moving past at speed, which is arguably the whole point of a graphic built for visibility rather than subtlety.

Someone riding daily through traffic will get more genuine value from this decor's brake light than someone riding occasionally on open roads, simply because the feature only does its job when there's a vehicle close behind to see it. Judge it against your own commute, not against a spec sheet, and the value either holds up or it doesn't.

Fit across the size run

XS to XXL, six sizes altogether. We don't carry over a shell-count figure from a related Shark helmet without confirming it for the Skwal i3 specifically — since we couldn't, it's left unstated, and the size chart remains the accurate reference.

Where the Skwal i3 sits on price

Shark prices five road helmets on one ladder. From the bottom: Ridill 2 (€189.99+), D-Skwal 3 (€219.99+), Skwal Cup (€269.99–€339.99, no LED fitted), this decor (€349.99), and the Skwal i Cup (€329.99+), which shares the LED brake light with this helmet alone.

Spare parts, later

Longevity isn't just about the shell holding up in a crash; it's also about whether parts are still available in three years. The Skwal i3's VZ400 visor and Pinlock 70 insert are shared across the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup, which keeps that answer favourable.

What this helmet does not have

Last section, and the most important one to read carefully: no SHARP star rating belongs to the Skwal i3 itself — only the older Skwal and Skwal 2 have been tested, and their four stars are theirs, not this helmet's. ECE 22.06 with no FIM suffix, no MIPS, no electronic quick-release system, no tear-off posts on the visor, and no IRID photochromic compatibility. The buckle is a micrometric ratchet, not a double-D ring. And the brake light's legality on German public roads: unconfirmed in every source used for this research. Shark's own manual tells the rider to check their own country's legislation rather than making the claim itself, gives no E-mark for the light, and leaves the question open — so do we.

Power, charging and what happens when it's flat

A sealed battery sits behind the LED system, charged via USB-C through a cable stored in the neck protection — about three hours for a full charge, roughly twelve hours of flashing-light use from it. It sleeps after 60 seconds without movement and shuts down after 72 hours of total inactivity, both automatic. Shark's manual describes what happens at the very end of the charge plainly: the system switches on, then off again almost instantly, and stays that way until it's recharged.

What ECE 22.06 actually tests

Twice as many impact points, several test speeds instead of one, an oblique-impact anvil test, and a rotational-force score via the Brain Injury Criterion — that's the practical difference between ECE 22.05 and 22.06, and every Skwal i3 is certified to the newer standard, tested with visor, Pinlock and comms unit fitted. It's been mandatory for newly homologated EU helmets since January 2024. The certificate reads 2206 with no FIM suffix attached: road-legal certification, not a competition one.

Shell, closure and ventilation

Four front intakes, two rear extractors, a multichannel path between them, a micrometric ratchet buckle at the chin instead of a double-D ring, and a shell of injection-moulded Lexan polycarbonate over a multi-density EPS liner — that's the unglamorous engineering sitting underneath whichever graphic you pick on the Skwal i3.

Weight as neck load over a day's ride

1,570 g, smallest shell, per Shark — and an independent long-term review lands on the same figure, which is at least reassuring even if it doesn't settle the question for larger sizes on the larger shell. Set against the roughly 1,250–1,800 g range most road-legal full-face helmets in our catalogue occupy, the Skwal i3 sits toward the middle, not the light end and not the heavy end.

Visor and Pinlock

Optical Class 1 is the certification, VZ400 is the visor family, and the Skwal i3 shares both with the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup. A Pinlock 70 comes pre-fitted with adjustable tension, the lens tapers from 3 mm to 2.2 mm around a moulded vortex generator, the coating resists scratches, and a central grip with central locking handles tool-free removal. This visor doesn't feature on Shark's IRID photochromic list — that's reserved for the Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro.

In the box

Pinlock 70 fitted to the visor, the USB-C charging cable already in the neck protection, and the full set of Shark documentation — 5-year warranty and LED manual — ship with every Skwal i3.
