A service schedule counts kilometres, because kilometres are the only thing a motorcycle can count. Dust keeps a different diary. Two V-Strom 1050s can reach the same reading on the odometer with intake tracts that have nothing in common — one fed on damp northern tarmac, the other on ten days of dry piste at the back of a group, where an hour puts more through the element than a month of commuting ever will. The Sprint Filter T12 PM253T12 is built for the second one: a dry polyester special non-woven filtering to 7 microns, specified for off-road use, dust and extreme conditions.

Dust keeps its own calendar

Exposure is not a function of distance but of what hung in the air while you covered it, and no instrument on the bike records that. With a disposable paper element the mismatch cannot be resolved: checking means buying, so the check waits for the interval printed in the book, and the interval knows nothing about your last ten days. A washable element removes the cost of looking. You can open the airbox at the end of a dusty stage, see what the day actually did and reset it on the spot. That is a different way of servicing a filter — by exposure rather than by mileage — and it suits a bike ridden in wildly different air from one week to the next.

Seven microns and what it takes back

Fine media hold more and flow less; there is no version of this in which you get both. The P08 weave filters at 80 microns and is rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec, the P037 at 37 microns and 4,500, the P14 at 14 microns and 1,800, and the T12 at 7 microns and 560. On a 1050 that is a serious amount of flow to give up on purpose, so let the riding decide rather than the smallest number in the list. Tarmac-biased touring is P08 territory. Sustained dust is where this medium earns what it asks.

Care and cleaning

The everyday service needs a compressor and nothing else: air on the clean face, dirt leaving by the dirty one. Where that is not enough, lukewarm water and a mild detergent will do it, rinsed until the water runs clear. It then dries fully in open air — never with heat, never with a flame — and goes back in dry and unoiled, as it came. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.

Fitment & Compatibility

Made for the Suzuki V-Strom 1050 built from 2020 to 2026: the original element comes out, this one goes in, and the airbox is left alone.
